Swain County schools are preparing to offer an additional free meal to students.
Sixty percent of students in Swain quality for free or reduced meals at school. That makes the district eligible for a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant for an afternoon feeding program at no cost to the local district.
The nutrition director hopes to have it up and running Oct. 1.
Brown says the meal will likely consist of a sandwich, vegetable, fruit and milk. She says it will be available in the cafeterias of the county’s four schools.
