A Presence at Back to School Nights
AN INNOVATIVE STRATEGY IN CHAPEL HILL-CARRBORO CITY SCHOOLS

By being a part of school Open Houses, “Meet the Teacher” events, or "Back to School Nights," school nutrition is presented with equal importance as instructional programs. It's a great chance to showcase school meals as a vital part of the school day.

Nutrition staff can start off the school year with an e-mail to all principals in their district asking for the dates and times of these events. Let them know you want to set up a table with samplings, menu handouts, and applications. Ask also for the nutrition team at each school to be included in the staff shirts that many schools supply for events such as these.

Having a presence at these events starts the school year off on a positive note, and fosters the kind of positive cafeteria/school partnership that benefits everyone—most of all the students.
