Volunteer for Cooking Matters for Kids
SPRING 2018


The No Kid Hungry NC/UNC SNAP-Ed Child Nutrition Project is looking for volunteers to assist with providing Cooking Matters for Kids classes in Orange County, NC. Cooking Matters for Kids is a cooking based nutrition education program that empowers kids in 3rd-5th grade to make healthy choices and prepare simple, low-cost meals and snacks. Currently Scheduled Series:

Cameron Park Elementary School, 240 St. Mary’s Rd, Hillsborough, NC 27278
Dates: Tuesdays from 1/16/18-4/24/18 (no class on 1/23, 3/13, and 4/3)
Time: 3-5pm (set-up: 3-3:30pm, lesson: 3:30-4:30pm, clean-up: 4:30-5pm)

Central Elementary School, 154 Hayes Street, Hillsborough, NC 27278
Dates: Thursdays from 1/25/18-4/26/18 (no class on 3/15 and 4/5)
Time: 3-5pm (set-up: 3-3:30pm, lesson: 3:30-4:30pm, clean-up: 4:30-5pm)

Duties may include:

  • Attending training session and reviewing lesson materials prior to activities
  • Leading hands-on nutrition education and cooking activities
  • Setting up/cleaning up activities
  • Working as part of a team with other volunteers
  • Administering surveys to participants as part of program evaluation

Time Commitment:

Cooking Matters for Kids is a semester-long time commitment. We are looking for volunteers who are able to commit to helping with an entire series, rather than just sign up to help with a few sessions. It is okay to miss a few sessions with advance notice, however.

Qualifications:

  • An interest in nutrition, cooking, and working with children
  • Ability to work as part of a team with other volunteers
  • Dependable, organized, and adaptable

Additional Information:

  • Carpooling can be arranged to either site, if needed
  • Additional series may be added by the beginning of the semester. If you are interested in volunteering but Tuesdays or Thursdays do not work for your schedule, let us know and we can follow-up if additional opportunities become available.
