No such thing as a free lunch? Think again.
Three Haywood County elementary schools are now serving free lunch — and breakfast to boot — to every student in the school, even those who typically wouldn’t qualify for subsidized meals.
“I love being able to tell a parent ‘Send your kids to school and we’ll feed them. You don’t have to worry about it,’” said Clyde Elementary Principal Byron Burnette. “When they’re not hungry, they can learn.”
Clyde and North Canton elementary schools started free-meals-for-all-students two years ago. This year, Hazelwood Elementary joined in.
The program has been a lucky break for families at those three schools who no longer have to panic if they run out of time to pack lunch or eat breakfast during their morning dash.
“Having that option is a relief, because if you are running late, at least you know you are covered,” said Nora Doggett, mother of two boys at Clyde Elementary.
